The meeting was begun at 9:30a.m. May 21, 1998.

The representatives of the member universities of the Association of Carpathian Region Universities (ACRU), who took part in the 7th ACRU Rectors’ Conference, accepted the financial reports as presented by the Secretary General, Tomas Sabol. The Secretary General presented the idea of projects proposed by LUISS Management pertaining to ”Tourism and Business Development in the Carpathian Region,” and by the University of Wolverhampton pertaining to ”European Industrial Training and Information Centers.”

The participants agreed to the co-funding of the training program ”Management of Continuing Education” to be delivered by Kennesaw State University from the ACRU general fund. The amount of ACRU co-funding should guarantee that the participants’ fee will not exceed $300 for paying members of ACRU. Applicants should submit their applications by June 21, 1998. The participants expressed sincere thanks to Kennesaw State University and especially to Barbara Calhoun for the organization and support of the project. The participants agreed to provide partial financial support from the ACRU general fund for those members who cannot pay their participants’ fee.

The participants welcomed the presentation of the paper ”Future Efforts Involving the Association of Carpathian Region Universities and the U.S. Higher Education Associations and Institutions,” written by Tomas Sabol, as a basis of ideas for future projects.

The members are requested to send updated information on their universities to the Secretary General for the update of the ACRU WWW home page and update of other ACRU information materials. They agreed that the upgrade of the ACRU WWW page will be funded from the ACRU general fund.

Prof. John Borland presented information concerning the University of Wales - Bangor. The participants approved the University as an Associate Member.

Discussion concerning the acceptance of new institutions of higher education resulted in a recommendation to postpone such decisions until they demonstrate the ability to fulfill their mission objectives.

A committee for fundraising (for the RAM project but also for other ACRU projects) was established consisting of one representative of each country: Beata Palfalvy Sandor - Hungary, Serban Agachi - Romania, Yurij Rashkevich - Ukraine, Romana Sliwa - Poland, Tomas Sabol - Slovakia. The university representatives will send a Letter of Support for the RAM project stating support by the university management and the funding realized for the project will be used explicitly for the project.

A report on the work of the Library Group was presented by Klara Koltay. They prepared a report resulting in the decision to proceed with ”The inter-library loan and document-delivery project.” Its aims and needs must be formulated to prepare a proposal for funding. The Library Group recommends that the libraries use USMARC bibliographic format in order to enable easy cooperation. Also, libraries should help universities in joint utilization of their resources.

A new National Coordinator for Hungary will be Prof.Dr. Aladar Nagy, Vice-rector of the University of Miskolc. The participants expressed their thanks to Prof. Gyula Patko, former national Coordinator for Hungary for his work.

Each university representative will nominate an administrative contact person for the university and will send his/her e-mail address to the Secretary General.

The General Council approved the following solution for dealing with delinquent members: The ACRU members who have not paid their annual membership fee for the current year can participate in all ACRU events and activities (ACRU Annual Conference, workshops etc.), but must cover their participation from their internal resources. The deadline for payment is December 31st of the previous year.

The participants presented also university’s bilateral projects.

The participants expressed thanks to the organizers of the Conference led by Prof. Paul Serban Agachi for their work.

The next meeting will be organized by State University Lviv Polytechnic, Lviv, Ukraine.
